Unbelievable.
From the Washington Times article by Charles Hurt (registration required):
The Senate voted yesterday to allow illegal aliens to collect Social Security benefits based on past illegal employment -- even if the job was obtained through forged or stolen documents.
"There was a felony they were committing, and now they can't be prosecuted. That sounds like amnesty to me," said Sen. John Ensign, the Nevada Republican who offered the amendment yesterday to strip out those provisions of the immigration reform bill. "It just boggles the mind how people could be against this amendment."
The Senate voted to table Ensign's amendment, SA 3985. You can see the roll call votes here. (Missouri's Senators voted against tabling the amendment.)
Voter's MUST start asking political candidates if they will promise to limit themselves to two terms. Better yet, we should start hounding Washington to pass term limits.
Reactions to this bit of Senatorial wisdom, from die-hard REPUBLICANS no less :
Mary Kathrine Ham, blogging for Hugh Hewitt: " I told a couple of apolitical friends about the Social Security amendment last night and they thought I was joking."
Ann Coulter (I'm quoting her?! Oh, how far I've fallen): "Press "1" for English; press "2" for a new president ..." (Hat tip to La Shawn Barber for that link)
Michelle Malkin: Notes that an illegal Guatemalan provided fake I.D. to 9/11 terrorists. (Thanks again to La Shawn)
Rush Limbaugh: "Legalizing identity theft..."
Update: While Hewitt, Ingraham, Hannity, etc., seem to think that the solution to all this nonsense is talking sternly to the Republicans and then VOTING FOR THEM AGAIN in November, Boortz (as usual) has a better idea, namely, using the NUCLEAR OPTION.
Force the Republicrats to lose control of the House in November and send a warning shot over the bow of the Senate.
Not that I want the Democrats, God forbid, to be a majority in both bodies.
Not to worry. The Senate will constantly override the House, resulting in gridlock. Come 2008, voters can then reassess the situation.
Sigh. Of course, I can always hope that the Libertarian party actually gets with the program and fields a credible candidate in '08. Come on guys, think MORE liberty, not "I want everything all at once, or nothing at all."
I'm praying that the party actually listens to the Libertarian Reform Caucus.
