Veterans Day

000_0027 Today is Veterans Day.

Reconnect America has suggestions for ways you can give back to our veterans. Some of my personal favorites are Wounded Warriors, AnySoldier, and the Fallen Patriot Fund.

Give a hug to troops, past and present, today.

Ron Paul and Obama Favorites of Military

In spite of the vicious attacks from conservative talk show hosts (including local talker, Vince Jericho), Ron Paul STILL LEADS ALL REPUBLICANS IN DONATIONS FROM THE MILITARY!

Among GOP candidates, Ron Paul, the only Republican who opposes the war, has brought in the biggest haul from the military since the start of the 2008 election cycle in January—at least $19,250. Republican John McCain, a Vietnam War prisoner who backs the administration's policy in Iraq, has raised $18,600. Paul, who was a flight surgeon in the Air Force, got nearly twice as much from servicemen and women in the campaign's first six months as GOP fundraising front-runner Mitt Romney and four times more than better-known candidate Rudy Giuliani.

Obama, who also has opposed the war from the start, leads all presidential hopefuls in donations from our military.

I can't wait to see how they spin this one.

Speaking of our troops, stop by and visit Military for Ron Paul.

Military Shows Ron Paul Some Love

This may come as a surprise to Sean Hannity. According to recent FEC filings, Ron Paul leads all other candidates in campaign donations from military personnel (declared, active and retired).  Link: PHREADOM

Military support for staying in Iraq may be waning, if a recent poll on Military.com is any indicator. Tom Engelhardt has more at The Nation.

Welcome Home Our Marines!

Update: I (finally) got my homecoming pictures uploaded. You can find them by clicking the "Photo Albums" link at the top of the page.

From KSGF's site:

Join KSGF For A Welcome Home Celebration

News Talk KSGF encourages you to join Vincent David Jericho in welcoming home 34 Marines and Sailors from Weapons Company, Third Battalion, 24th Marines, returning from Fallujah, Saturday, April 28th.

Jericho will start broadcasting from the reserve center on Pythian behind Evangel University in Springfield at 4:30 pm. He will be talking with family members and the citizens who turn out for the rally.

Somewhere between 6 and 7pm the Marines and Sailors will arrive by motorcade. We encourage everyone to come out and be a part of this homecoming. Flags and uplifting banners will be appreciated!

Parking is available in the Evangel University parking lot off of Glenstone. When the motorcade is ½ hour out Jericho will ask people to line Pythian and Glenstone with signs and flags and encourage everyone to cheer the faces off as the soldiers go by.
Click here for a map of the rally location.

Today Is Armed Forces Day

Red_white_blue_ribbon Today is Armed Forces Day. Take the time to say a prayer for our troops. Donate to the Wounded Warrior Project, Soldier's Angels, Any Soldier, or Star For Stripes.

Soldier's Angels motto is "May no soldier go unloved." You can find a way to support our troops by going here and picking a project to support.

A great way to show your appreciation is to go to the Soldier's Angel's Store, where you can send a First Response Backpack to wounded soldier's when they arrive at the hospital (they have nothing but what is left of the shirt on their back when they get there). You can also send a small care package or a calling card.

Fallen Soldiers

Update: Sgt. Lamberson's family shares their memories. (Spfd. News Leader article)

Thanks to former Springfieldian, David Harper of Echo9er, for passing this on:

US Army Sgt. 1st Class Randall L. Lamberson, 36, of Springfield, Mo., and Spc. David S. Collins, 24, of Jasper Ga., died of injuries sustained in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, on April 9, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their HMMWV during combat operations. The soldiers were assigned to the Army’s 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort   Campbell, Ky.

Lamberson died in Balad, Iraq on April 10th.

Collins died in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, on April 9th.

Mr. Harper (Sgt.Major,US Army (retired) would like to convey his condolences to the families of these soldiers, as would I.

Maupin's Mother Supports Others While Waiting For Her Missing Son

Carolyn  Maupin still waits for news about her son, Matt. After 2 years, he's the only member of our military who remains unaccounted for.

"I honestly thought he'd be back by now," she said. "I didn't think it would take this long.

Pictures of Matt are placed inside the boxes of goodies sent to troops in Iraq by the Maupins' Yellow Ribbon Support Center - a storefront operation near the Sam's Club where Matt used to work.

Sgt. Maupin has been missing since April 9, 2004, when his convoy was ambushed near Baghdad.

A week later, Arab television network Al-Jazeera aired a videotape showing Maupin sitting on the floor surrounded by five masked men holding automatic rifles.

The Maupins have been busy getting computers to soldiers stationed in Iraq and hope to raise $100,00 to fund scholarships in the name of area soldiers who have died in Iraq.

"They have a great deal of courage," said Republican Rep. Jean Schmidt, an avid supporter who lives in Loveland near the Maupins' hometown. "They've kept the candle burning for Matt; they're also keeping it burning for every member of the military."

Matt's brother, Micah, is a Marine Cpl. stationed in California.

Please keep all of our military members and their families in your prayers.

Supreme Court Mandates Campus Access For Recruiters

The Supreme Court ruled unanimously Monday that colleges that accept federal money must allow military recruiters on campus, despite university objections to the Pentagon’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy on gays.

The newest justice, Samuel Alito, was not on the bench when the case was argued.

MoveOn.org: Just Stupid or Do They Think YOU Are?

MoveOn.org  has a new TV ad. The problem is, that while they are crying alligator tears over "our" soldiers, the men they show in the pictures are Brits. One Army Captain is not amused:

These are not your normal everyday U.S. soldiers though. If you look at the frame they are actually British soldiers. One is in shorts (we don't have shorts as a normal combat uniform) and the others are all clearly wearing British pattern fatigues. So, my point is that these [turkeys] pretend to argue on my behalf and bash the president in the name of my crying wife, and they don't even know what an American soldier looks like! Anyway, it really [ticked] me off.

The only thing that would have made this more galling is if the ad had mentioned   that the liberation of Iraq was "unilateral." (Emphasis added)

Help Our Troops Make a Difference

Update: Kevin's wheelchair is on it's way! Link:The Military Vote

I'm bumping this post and updating: According to Camp Katrina, donations for the Wheelchair for Kevin, have reached $500. After his wheelchair is purchased, remaining funds will go toward his medical bills.

As a dividend, your donations are doing the hearts of some of our soldiers good too, as noted at The Military Vote.

PLEASE DONATE! Go to The Military Vote, find the post entitled "Kevin's New Wheelchair" and hit the donation button embedded in that post. All they are asking for is $10-$20 dollars, max. (Hint: copy the email address below the donation button; you'll need to insert the addy when you fill out the form at Pay Pal.)

Same Ole' Different Day writes of the injuries suffered by Kevin, an Iraqi acting as an interpreter for our troops:

Seeing him in the condition he was in was the first time during this whole deployment made me realize how lucky I have been. Kevins injuries consisted of a broken arm, two broken legs, a removed kidney, and a removed spleen. The month prior to the blast Kevin had been working for the military as an interpreter, and he was here to pick up his check. Upon seeing Kevin I was extremely happy, but it pained me to see him sitting there in such pain. Not being able to walk yet he was sitting in a folding chair that doubles as his wheelchair. Wherever he had to go two people had to pick the chair up and move him because he cannot afford a proper wheelchair. We asked him if he needed anything, and his reply was that our friendship was all that he needed.

A Response to Rep. Murtha

Here is one military man's response to Rep. John Murtha:

Personally, I don't want leave this country feeling like a coward. I want the hero image my wife has of me to never be diminished by having to hear people speak in the future of how we went into Iraq with great intentions only to abandon it's people, strengthening of Democracy, and the country's fledgling government we helped to establish. I love my country and everything it stands for. With that I must say I respect Murtha for all he has done... I can only hope he will see the hypocrisy in his latest criticism of the war.

Support Our Troops

Froggy Ruminations and Black Five are two blogs that have donation buttons for Project Valour-IT. I've donated to this worthy cause and would encourage everyone to do likewise. What a great way to give a little back to those who have given so much! Remember, even if you can only contribute a small amount, it adds up.

Project Valour-IT, in memory of SFC William V. Ziegenfuss, provides voice-controlled software and laptop computers to wounded Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines recovering from hand and arm injuries or amputations at major military medical centers.  Operating laptops by speaking into a microphone, our wounded heroes are able to send and receive messages from friends and loved ones, surf the 'Net, and communicate with buddies still in the field without having to press a key or move a mouse. The experience of CPT Charles "Chuck" Ziegenfuss, a partner in the project who suffered hand wounds while serving in Iraq, illustrates how important this voice-controlled software can be to a wounded servicemember's recovery.

Update: The fund-raising contest is ending soon. If their donation buttons aren't still up on their blogs, you can use the above link to go directly to Project Valour-IT.

Veterans' Day

J_in_iraq_1Since today is  Veterans' Day, I thought I'd post a picture of my favorite Vet, my son (that's him, kneeling in the bottom right of the picture--all 6'6", 275 pounds of him).

Thanks and prayers to all our soldiers, past and present. You keep this country strong in spite of the petty shenanigans from both political parties.

Please consider visiting one of the links on the right and contributing to the welfare of our troops.

Remember Those Who Serve: Sergeant Matt Maupin

The Maupin family has donated 90 computers and opened the Maupin Computer Center to improve life for our troops. Meanwhile, their son is still missing after an attack on his convoy in April of 2004.

Torture, Iranian Propaganda Cartoons And Other Things

The mil blog, Camp Katrina, has a number of good posts you'll want to check out; here's just two:

Time to Regroup on the Whole Torture Thing reminds us that our troops DO NOT TORTURE. (If you want to consider lack of sleep and stress positions as torture, then you should probably do something about those college students who do this on a routine basis)

This Ain't the Smurfs, People has a link to an Iranian "cartoon" just for the kiddies. Make mother proud. Strap on grenades and blow up the evil Israelis.

"Staged" Event with the President

Cut through all the media bleating and read Sgt. Ron Long's post on the meeting with President Bush yesterday.

It makes my stomach ache to think that we are helping to preserve free speech in the US, while the media uses that freedom to try to RIP DOWN the President and our morale, as US Soldiers. They seem to be enjoying the fact that they are tearing the country apart. Worthless!

Bias, what bias?

Peaceniks2Springfield, like many other parts of the country, had a "Peace" rally today. Here is a picture of the anti-war crowd.

Actually, judging from the signs, it wasn't so much a peace rally as it was an anti-Bush rally (although there was at least one sign denouncing SUVs.)

What I find most interesting are the actions of a local TV station (I'm not sure at this point which station, but I intend to find out.)

This station sent out a reporter and camera to film and interview the war protesters--JUST the war protesters. They completely ignored what was on the other side of the street, where, lo and behold...

Louisiana Guardsmen Return to chaos. How you can help.

Governor Blanco was on hand to greet the first planeload of Louisiana National Guardsmen as they set foot back in their home state. For most of them, it will be trading on kind of battle for another.

After seeing 35 of their number killed in Iraq, members of the 256th Brigade Combat Team readied to take care of relatives made refugees, or, perhaps, mourn family members killed or hurt by the hurricane and its devastating aftermath.

For Spc. Nathan Faust of Chalmette it's a total loss. His family home is flooded to the peak of the roof. His fiancee's home in Plaquemines Parish is at least as devastated. He said his uncle, the warden at the Orleans Parish jail, was trapped in his office by riots for 30 hours in knee-deep water.

Blanco said that the soldiers would be offered the chance to continue to serve in the Guard and help rebuild Louisiana. "That will keep them employed. This will be an opportunity to tide them over."

You can read the rest of the article here: Louisiana Guardsmen Return Home From Iraq

Soldier's Angels is taking donations specifically for soldiers (and their families) from areas affected by the hurricane. They also have suggestions for relief packages you can make and send. Gift cards to stores such as Wal-mart are the most requested items.

Please help these soldiers who have given so much.

"Church" calls cops on pro-troops demonstrators

100_0016Once again, liberals demonstrate their tolerance...

There we were (we being a bunch of pro-troops patriots, Vince Jericho of KSGF and staff) peacefully standing on Battlefield street this morning, showing our support for the troops.

The next thing we know, someone from the First Unitarian Universalist "Church" of Springfield called the police, complaining: we were using their parking lot, the KSGF van was on their property, KSGF's TABLE was on their property...all of which was true. There were a few cars using their lot, KSGF had parked their van, speakers blaring, at the corner of their lot--conveniently next to the small group (as in 5) of anti-war protesters. I'm sure Vince thought they would enjoy listening to the show. They apparently didn't.

Help KSGF support our troops

Your presence is requested!

Who: KSGF's Vince Jericho and crew.

What: A show of support for our troops! Cindy Sheehan supporters have been protesting since Sunday. Counter the negative message they are sending to our men and women in the military and show up!

Where: The First Unitarian Universalist Church, 2434 E. Battlefield, Springfield, MO.

When: August 31st, from 6-9 a.m.

Please stop by, if only for 10 minutes, and let our military know that you appreciate and support them! There is already a small group across the street from the church, showing their appreciation for the troops. Please add to their efforts tomorrow morning.

If you need more information, please call the radio station.

Supporting our troops? Please...

Wednesday evening, Sharon Ash intends to hold an anti-war, candlelight vigil near Olde Town Center in support of Cindy Sheehan--at least she doesn't try to claim she's supporting our troops.

Ash and Willard resident Joan Collins are members of the Peace Network of the Ozarks, a group that formed three years ago to try to stop the invasion of Iraq before it happened.

Collins said she'll be at Wednesday's vigil.

"It's important on a personal level because I can't imagine losing a child to a war that shouldn't have been launched," she said. Along with backing Sheehan's effort, Collins said Wednesday's candlelight vigil will be "in support of our troops and the families who have suffered losses." (Emphasis added)

I can tell you right now, had my son come home in a coffin, I would not be pleased with the sort of "support" that these women are showing.

Perhaps they mean to support the terrorists by raising their hopes that we'll pack it up and go home. It has been done before.

You want to support our troops? Look over there on the side bar--there's plenty of opportunities starting with American Snipers.org and ending with the Wounded Warrior Project.

Just know one thing; Sidle up to me with your little candle, sister, and you're likely to start a war on a whole new front.

Michael Yon : Online Magazine: Empty Jars

Anyone who has any interest in Iraq needs to be following  Michael Yon's  compelling narrative.

And the calm man, who appeared so clever and confident while standing there comforting a crying infant? How the picture changed when a young American solider stepped into the frame, reached for and gently took the child. Without his prop, the actor faltered, his illusion cracked and shattered as he shuddered before the soldier. This man who cowered behind a crying child was one of the top terrorist leaders in Mosul.

I remember the Kashmiri Mohammedan and his three jars. While terrorists on earth do their best to keep us down, men and women boarded a space ship in Florida today, and flew into space.

Update on Westboro

I heard that KSGF will be airing an interview with Westboro tomorrow morning.  (Scroll down for earlier posts on Westboro.) No doubt the station and Vince Jericho will be criticized by some for ceding to their demand for airtime.

I won't be one to find fault with their decision. They are saving Sgt. Sutton's mourners from the spectacle of hate-filled people milling around in front of the cemetery holding their signs bearing vile sentiments and pictures for the whole funeral procession to see.

Westboro:A letter from a son who left

I'm sorry that I have my needle stuck on Westboro "church" today, but I am one mad military mom. My son (a sergeant in the 82nd Airborne, 313th Military Intelligence Battalion ) would most likely shrug his shoulders and tell me that "freedom is what we fight for."

I am happy to report that my son returned home from Iraq--sadly, many others, like Sgt. Sutton, have died in Iraq, Afghanistan and countless other places around the globe. So,  for those  who have died in the  service of their country and  for  the families they left behind,  I present a few more  links  concerning  Westboro:

This letter was written by Mark Phelps, who is the son of Westboro pastor-of-hate, Frank Phelps. A letter from a son who left. It speaks volumes.

Soldiers Missing In Afghanistan

Froggy Ruminations has Words Of Wisdom on our soldiers in Afghanistan. Once again, please keep our servicemen and women in your prayers and remember the how and why we are able to celebrate this Independence Day.

I have seen the following posted on a number of sites and thought I would share it here:

It is the soldier, not the reporter,
Who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet,
Who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the soldier, not the campus organizer,
Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.
It is the soldier who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag.

Stories From Iraq

More interesting blogging from Boots on the Ground, where you can get first-hand accounts on what it's like in Iraq.  The line about Al-Jazeera reminds me of the story a soldier told me about being  set-up by reporters so they would have some excitement to report on.

Quote from Boots on the Ground:

"As long as the United States continues to stay in Iraq and help the Iraqi government, the terrorists and insurgents will lose. They are only capable of killing a few of us at a time and whenever they manage do organize a co-ordinated attack they are swiftly defeated. I know of the Prison attack that happened near us where 40 soldiers got injured, at least 30 of the attackers were killed. Zarqawi is a master at sending his men on suicide missions. They never succeed, despite the good press they get. Anytime hear reports of an Al-Jazeera news truck around, you know something bad is going to happen."

Nuevo Laredo Rages On

Former members of military intel battalion now side with drug traffickers. Read it here.

A relative, who was stationed at Ft. Huachuca,  says that these guys have some  serious fire-power. He  saw the constant activity at the border, with Mexican police sometimes escorting  the drug traffickers across the border.

He had seen the Minutemen when they were observing the border, said they  were endangering their lives, and  noted  that this was a job for well-armed, trained individuals. While I agreed with his point, I told him that the Minutemen were drawing attention to the border problem by their presence and may be the only way we get those well-trained and armed people manning our borders.

update on ejected marine

Neal Boortz now has an update on the rude manner in which Sgt. Richardson was turned away at Carson Middle School

update to heard on boortz

There isn't anything up yet on the Neal Boortz web site concerning the Georgia school principal tossing the visiting Marine out of her school and the Herald-Journal  (a weekly newspaper located in Greene County, Georgia) doesn't have a web site.  The nice folks at the paper did, however, did fax me a copy of their story.

Here is the gist of the story:  Matthew Lund, a teacher at Carson Middle School (which is somewhere in Greene County, GA), had students corresponding with U. S. Marines stationed in Iraq as part of a (6th grade) language arts class. One of these soldiers, Sgt. Zach Richardson, was a former roommate of Lund's.

Sgt. Richardson, having  returned to the U. S. ,  wanted to thank the students in person.
